Almost 40 years after the end of the band, Flame Dream have reformed with their original line-up. In the early 80s, the band from Lucerne accomplished the feat of bringing the tradition of progressive rock music into the New Wave era, albeit stylistically modernized compared to the 70s sound. This modernization of the classic prog tradition worked particularly well in the case of the 1982 album “Supervision”. Few great prog bands managed to bridge the gap between the symphonic, complex bliss of the 70s and the clinical, cold sterility of the 80s in such an appealing way. At some point, however, the bastion of progressive rock on the picturesque shores of Lake Lucerne collapsed due to mainstream arbitrariness. What remained were four very appealing prog albums, one mediocre and one anemic mainstream album.
Unfortunately, the Swiss band’s albums have not yet been officially re-released on CD. So far, there have only been illegal reissues of some albums as burned bootleg CDs by the obscure Tachika label in Japan. In 2022, the former band members began preparing the long overdue official CD reissues. “Elements”, “Out In The Dark” and “Supervision” are scheduled for CD reissue in the course of 2024. During the meetings of the four original members, it was fortunately revealed that creative “vibes” were obviously still present after four decades, which resulted in the writing and recording of new songs. The creative end result, which was completely unexpected for the prog scene, is now available in the form of a new album entitled “Silent Transition”.
Like a time capsule, the six tracks contained on the album offer all the ingredients of the typical Flame Dream trademarks and catapult the band’s style from the early 80s directly into the year 2024. This includes, above all, Peter Wolf’s still bright vocals and Roland Ruckstuhl’s richly varied keyboards. Already in the brisk opener “No Comfort Zone”, the reformed Swiss show in around ten minutes how bulky symphonic rhythms can be combined with a catchy groove. Without denying the roots of the classic prog tradition, the sound has definitely arrived in the modern age. If you are looking for comparable bands, UK, VdGG and Supertramp in a modernized version come to mind. This mixture is also retained in the following title track. While Flame Dream were quite keyboard-heavy on the album “Out In The Dark” with the exception of the participation of guitarist Dale Hauskins, the electric guitar of guest musician Alex Hutchings is quite present in 2024. In a shimmering fusion style, this contributes to a transparent sound and gives “Velvet Clouds”, for example, an atmospheric note with ornate sound ornaments together with the variable keyboard inserts.
In the track “Signal On The Shores”, the Swiss offer an unusually modern instrumental symphonic rock with an alternation of concise electric guitar and bold synth fanfares. From a purely dramatic point of view, this is the highlight of the album, before “Winding Paths” brings a high-quality and unexpected comeback album to a close in winding pathos.
